WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in response to a resolution passed in the House on Friday, July 11, that expresses support for Israel as it defends itself against attacks from Hamas:

“In passing this resolution, the House came together to stand in support of Israel’s right to defend itself against an onslaught of rockets fired at peaceful communities within its borders.  This aggression by Hamas only serves to undermine the cause for which Palestinians living in Gaza have so long aspired:  the chance to live free of violence and with access to jobs and opportunities.  That Hamas has been using civilians as human shields while they fire rockets from populated neighborhoods is reprehensible.  Hamas’s actions destabilize regional security and threaten progress toward a final status agreement that would herald a brighter future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.

“I have visited Sderot more than once and have met with the families who live in the shadow of Hamas’s deadly rockets.  Anyone seeking to understand why Israel is taking strong, defensive action against Hamas ought to go to Sderot and see firsthand what their attacks have done to houses, schools, clinics, and businesses there.

“I am encouraged that the Iron Dome missile defense system, which was jointly developed by the United States and Israel, has successfully intercepted dozens of rockets.  I was proud to work with my colleagues to secure funding for Iron Dome research, development, and deployment, and I look forward to continuing to work with other Members of Congress, with the Administration, and with Israeli leaders to ensure that Israel has the tools it needs to defend itself against terror.”
