WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) delivered remarks today at a press conference with House Democratic leaders after House Republicans voted for a resolution to sue the President. Below is a transcript of his remarks:

“The American people are distressed and angry and disappointed with the Congress of the United States. Today’s performance is one of the reasons why. Wasting their time, wasting their money, and wasting a focus on jobs, on jumpstarting the middle class, on caring about them, and not about our own partisan, political confrontations.

“This suit will go nowhere. Legal scholar after legal scholar makes that observation. There are thirteen days left [between] now and when we adjourn for the election – what a shame. How disappointing to the American people that we would use almost a full day on wasting the people’s time and money. We need to do a lot better.

“It’s a sad day in the Congress of the United States. Never before in the history of the United States has this kind of action been taken. How sad.”
