WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this morning in response to comments by President Bush:

“The President said today he will invite Congressional leaders to the White House next week, and Democrats welcome a real discussion with the President on Iraq that has no preconditions.  However, if the President simply insists again that Congress rubber-stamp his failing stay-the-course strategy this would ignore the American people’s desire for us to work together to forge a new direction in Iraq.

“Democrats in Congress are absolutely committed to providing our men and women in harm’s way with the resources that they need – and deserve. In fact, the war-time spending bills passed by the House and Senate fully fund our troops and actually provide more resources than the President requested to fight the war on terror.

“In addition, it does not in any way limit the flexibility of our military to undertake whatever strategies they believe will best lead to success in bringing peace and security to Iraq.

“After four years of repeated mistakes by this Administration in Iraq, it is long past time for the Congress to demand accountability and a change in direction that will serve our nation’s security interests.”
