WASHINGTON – House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to the Bureau of Labor Statistic’s announcement that the nation’s unemployment rate continued to climb upwards to 6.1 percent, the highest unemployment rate in 9 years.  The country has lost 3.1 million jobs under President Bush, the worst job creation performance of any president in recent history.

“President Bush is failing America’s economy and workers.  Since he took office, unemployment has steadily been on the rise, but his only answer to this glaring problem is to cut taxes in a way that most economists agree won’t stimulate the economy and that will impose a greater share of the tax burden on the middle class.

“The President’s tax cuts have delivered a one-two punch to the American worker: fewer jobs and a larger share of the tax burden.  Democrats had a better plan that would have created five times as many jobs in 2003 without causing massive debt that will drag down our economy in the future.”
