WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Democrats elected Rep. John Larson (CT) to become the new Caucus Vice Chairman:

“Our Democratic Caucus was blessed to have three very strong candidates in this leadership election, and I would like to congratulate all of them – Joe Crowley, Jan Schakowsky and John Larson – for the spirited and substantive debate they brought to our Caucus.  They illustrate the diversity and determination that characterize House Democrats, and I look forward to continuing to work together with each of them to keep America safe, to keep our economy strong and to invest in our future.

“Our newly elected Vice Chairman John Larson is someone who will bring a strong, positive vision to the position.  At a time when the Bush Administration and Congressional Republicans are promoting an agenda that seeks to divide America, John Larson will be a very strong spokesman for the Democrats’ message that America is strongest when America is united.  As we begin the Second Session of the 109th Congress, the stakes could not be higher for the American people.  In John Larson, Americans can be confident that they have someone fighting for working families and for America’s middle class.

“I also am very pleased that both Joe and Jan will continue to make critical contributions to our Caucus and our Whip organization, in which both serve as Chief Deputy Whips.  Their efforts, and the efforts of our entire leadership team, have helped our Caucus become more unified than it has been in the last 50 years.”
