WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum designated the violence against the Rohingya in Myanmar as genocide:

“The campaign being perpetrated against the Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar must be called what it is: a genocide. I laud the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum for having the courage to lead in making this determination, and I thank its leaders for their commitment to the ongoing work of ensuring that nations never again attempt to destroy an entire people without facing a strong and concerted international response. The United States and the international community must work to end this genocide and ensure that the Rohingya can return safely home with a guarantee of their basic human and civil rights within Myanmar. If the Burmese government wishes to be open to the world and sit at the table of nations, it must set a place at home for all its people, recognizing the universal dignity of all who reside within its borders.”
