WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Bush made remarks on Health Savings Accounts in Bridgeport, Connecticut:
“After five and a half years in office, you would think that President Bush would recognize that the best way to solve problems is to seek bipartisan solutions, not push ill-conceived ideological proposals. Yet today, he continued to advocate a Health Savings Account proposal that has proven about as popular as his plan to privatize Social Security.
“Health Savings Accounts do nothing to solve the health care crisis that exists in America today. Forty-six million Americans have no health insurance today, and that figure has swelled by 6 million since President Bush took office. Furthermore, Republicans have failed to address the skyrocketing costs of health care. Health Savings Accounts would only exacerbate the health care crisis by discouraging preventative care and undermining traditional group insurance.
“It is time for Republicans to stop pushing ideological proposals that fail to address real problems, and to join Democrats in finding bipartisan solutions that will truly improve the quality, accessibility, and affordability of health care for Americans. Unfortunately, this Health Savings Account proposal is nothing more than a placebo for America’s health care crisis.”
