WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today regarding comments by President Bush at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado:

“It’s no wonder that the American people have grave reservations about the President’s handling of the occupation and reconstruction in Iraq.  The courage and valiant efforts of our troops there are simply not being matched with the articulation of a concrete, clear plan for success by President Bush and his Administration.

“In his speech today, the second in a series of foreign policy addresses, the President demonstrated once again that he is most at home with inarguable platitudes such as ‘we will win the war on terrorism.’  Virtually all Americans agree with general statements like this.  But the American people and our troops in harm’s way deserve more than repeated generalities and statements of resolve.  They deserve a plan that addresses, first and foremost, how the President is going to create security on the ground in Iraq, which is the key to our success there.

“The height of irony is the fact that President Bush continually says that we’ll do whatever it takes to prevail in Iraq and yet the Achilles’ heel of the President’s plan is his failure to put enough troops on the ground from the outset.

“The American people crave a clear roadmap for success and victory in Iraq and in the larger war on terrorism.  Today, unfortunately, the President failed again to provide one.”
