WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this morning in response to President Bush’s speech at the Reserve Officers Association:

“Americans have had enough of tough talk and empty rhetoric.  They want leaders who will be tough and smart.

“The Bush Administration and the do-less-than-Do-Nothing Republican Congress are failing our nation.  The American people know it, Democrats know it, and, yes, even Republicans know it.  That is why the President and Congressional Republicans are desperately attacking anyone who questions or disagrees with them.  They have accomplished so little and made so many mistakes that there is little else they can do before voters judge them on their failed record.

“America needs a new direction to address the Bush Administration’s stunning incompetence in foreign and domestic policy.  The President insists that the war in Iraq is part of a titanic struggle. Yet, the Administration sent too few troops to accomplish the task, failed to properly equip our own troops, failed to properly plan for the post-war period, and appointed unqualified political cronies for key positions in the Coalition Provisional Authority.

“We continue to pay the price today for the Administration’s incompetence in Iraq.  Car bombs rock that nation – killing our troops and innocent Iraqis – nearly every day.  A top American intelligence official has concluded that Anbar province is lost.  And, 16 American intelligence agencies have concluded in a NIE that we are creating more terrorists than we are killing.

“Again today, the President painted a picture of progress in Iraq and Afghanistan that does not exist in reality.  He must acknowlege his failures and change his strategy if we are to do justice to the bravery and sacrifice of our men and women in harm’s way."
