WASHINGTON – House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this evening in response to the House Republican child tax credit bill released late today:

“After Democrats turned up the heat on the GOP for the rank unfairness of excluding low-income working families from the child tax credit increase, the Republican controlled Senate reversed course and by an overwhelming vote of 94-2 did what should have been done in the first place.

“And now, after holding its finger to the political winds, the Bush Administration has strongly endorsed the Senate bill and told the House Republican leadership that the president is eager to sign this bill.  The Republicans should quit playing politics with the child tax credit and just do it.  They should not purposely bog this bill down when the House could take up the Senate passed version and send it to the president for his signature immediately.”
