MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
This week, the House joined together and passed the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, a bipartisan bill to help Americans access the education and training they need to find jobs. This bill is part of House Democrats’ Make It In America jobs plan, and I was proud to support its passage.
On Wednesday, President Obama announced that he is asking Congress to provide additional resources to help address the humanitarian crisis at the border. We have a moral obligation to ensure the children at the border are treated humanely and receive due process. I called on Speaker Boehner and House Republicans to work with Democrats to act quickly on the President’s request, and I will continue to urge swift passage of legislation to address this issue. At the same time, House Republican leaders should allow the House to consider comprehensive immigration reform, which enjoys strong support from the American people. It is long past time for the House to act on immigration reform.
Yesterday, House Republicans introduced a resolution that would authorize a lawsuit against President Obama. This is a blatantly partisan and political stunt, which will waste taxpayers’ money and valuable time that could be better served addressing comprehensive immigration reform and a whole host of other important issues, including creating jobs, protecting voting rights, raising the minimum wage, and renewing emergency unemployment insurance. As support for action on these issues continues to mount, I hope House Republicans will begin to work with us to address the interests and needs of those we represent.
In order to better understand the needs of our constituents and increase our engagement with them, House Democrats have launched our 5th Annual Member Online All-Star Competition. This three week competition helps us reach Americans across the country and demonstrates the significant role digital media plays in communicating our plans for creating jobs and helping American families access middle-class opportunities. If you are not doing so already, I would be honored if you would follow me at twitter.com/WhipHoyer, www.facebook.com/WhipHoyer, and instagram.com/repstenyhoyer for updates from Capitol Hill and Maryland’s Fifth District. I look forward to connecting with you on these social media platforms.
