For Immediate Release:
December 13, 2013

Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed a budget deal that set the funding levels of government for the next two years. I voted against this bill because it does not set our nation on a long-term fiscally-sustainable path, it does not replace the entire sequester, it did not extend unemployment insurance, it failed to address the debt limit, and it targeted hardworking federal employees and military pensions.  Our economy continues to lurch between Congressionally-created crises, and only a long-term, responsible, and balanced agreement will provide certainty and stability.  I will continue to advocate for the big, balanced fiscal deal that our economy, businesses and American families need.

I’m extremely disappointed that House Republicans ended 2013 without taking action on unemployment insurance. Because of their inaction, 1.3 million Americans will lose access to unemployment insurance benefits on December 28, with an additional 3.5 million Americans losing this critical safety net in 2014 - a hardship that many families cannot afford as they continue to search for work. It’s irresponsible and unconscionable that House Republicans decided not to take action before they left Washington for the year, and I will continue to urge the Republican leadership to take swift action on this issue.

I hope that when the House of Representatives reconvenes we will take immediate action on the long list of unfinished, critical legislation important to the American people, including jobs legislation, comprehensive immigration reform, a farm bill with adequate funding for nutrition programs, and ending discrimination in the work place with the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. This Republican-led Congress must make up for the time we’ve wasted this year mired in partisanship. Congress has plenty of work to do and I look forward to working toward balanced and bipartisan solutions on these and other issues in the new year.

Wishing you and your family health and happiness during this holiday season.

Sincerely yours,
