This week, House and Senate leaders spent five straight days meeting with the President to discuss how we can work together to ensure America pays its bills and reduce the deficit. I still strongly support a big compromise measure that would bring down the deficit in a balanced way, including both spending cuts and revenues. President Obama and Democratic leaders all agree we should pursue a grand bargain, and I hope Republicans work with us to meet this moment of opportunity to do something meaningful to strengthen our nation’s fiscal health. But unfortunately Republicans have remained steadfast in their policy of protecting tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, while advocating ending Medicare.

Next week, Republicans will consider a bill that doesn’t address the need to pay our nation’s bills and would call for drastic, harmful cuts to programs that millions of Americans depend on. This bill is not a solution to our fiscal challenges. Democrats will oppose this plan and continue fighting for a balanced approach to ensure we pay our nation’s bills, reduce our deficit and protect the middle class, seniors and the most vulnerable among us.

I was disappointed this week that House Republicans let another week go by without bringing a jobs bill to the Floor. Since taking the majority six months ago, Republicans have only passed one jobs bill and still do not have a comprehensive jobs agenda. Democrats, on the other hand, are focused on getting Americans back to work and have pursued the Make It In America agenda, a plan to support job creation by providing an encouraging environment for businesses to innovate and make products in the U.S. This is an agenda everyone can support and I hope Republicans will work with us to help spur job creation, grow our economy and ensure the middle class can Make It In America.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
