Message from the Democratic Whip

On Monday night, President Trump announced his nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, a decision that was based on a litmus test he laid out during the campaign: to nominate justices who would oppose the Affordable Care Act and Roe v. Wade. I strongly oppose this nomination and will continue to urge Senators on both sides of the aisle to reject it. A vote for Judge Kavanaugh is a vote in support of taking America back to the days when insurers could discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions and women didn’t have the freedom to make their own health care decisions. We’ve seen the Senate come together to oppose efforts to undermine access to affordable care and roll back reproductive rights. I hope they will do so again.

In the House this week, Democrats and Republicans came together to pass a resolution with strong bipartisan support that reaffirms our commitment to the NATO alliance. The transatlantic partnership is the bedrock of U.S. security and has served our nations well over the last century. Instead of standing with our allies at the NATO Summit this week and during his subsequent trip to the United Kingdom, the President alienated some our closest allies with his inflammatory rhetoric while embracing adversaries like Russia’s Putin.

Today, Special Counsel Robert Mueller indicted 12 Russian government officials for interfering in the 2016 election and found that these officials corresponded with Americans during the course of their illegal activities. There can be no doubt that Russia attacked our democracy. Yet, President Trump and Congressional Republicans continue to undermine the Special Counsel’s investigation. I continue to urge the President to hold Putin accountable for Russia’s attempts to subvert our democracy, and I urge Republicans in Congress to allow the Special Counsel’s investigation to move forward unimpeded and ensure we are taking precautions to prevent future interference.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
