THE LEADER'S REPORT: WEEK OF JULY 12, 2010

As Democrats continue to work to create jobs, Wall Street reform was passed by the Senate this week and is on its way to the President’s desk to become law.  After facing a financial meltdown that was the result of Republicans taking the referees off the field, this bill will rein in the excesses of Wall Street, rebuilding confidence in our economy in order to promote job creation. I’m disappointed that Republicans have already announced that they want to repeal this legislation, putting big banks back in control, which is the last thing America needs as we move forward in building a strong middle class again.

 

Also this week, Democrats continued fighting to restore fiscal responsibility as the House passed legislation to identify and eliminate improper payments by the government.  This bill, which will help reduce waste, fraud, and abuse by stopping payments to the wrong person, in the wrong amount, and at the wrong time, now goes to the President for his signature.

 

Next week, the House will consider several bills to address the BP Gulf oil spill, including a bill to increase research into oil spill clean-up technology; and one for research into cleaner, safer oil drilling. In addition, as soon as the Senate votes to send their bill back to the House, we will take immediate action to extend unemployment insurance benefits to the millions of Americans who need them.
