MESSAGE FROM THE MAJORITY LEADER

	This week, Democrats continued to build on actions already taken [2] to create jobs and grow the economy by passing legislation [3] to promote lending from community banks to small businesses. Small businesses are the engine of our economy, employing over half of all private sector employees and creating 64% of net new jobs over the past 15 years, so this legislation is vital to helping small businesses get access to the capital they need to expand, grow, and create new jobs. Congressional oversight of the BP Gulf oil spill continued this week, with hearings investigating why it happened, who is accountable, how to ensure it doesn’t happen again, and what we can do to lessen the consequences that this terrible tragedy has had on the environment and the people of the Gulf region. Next week, the House will consider campaign finance reform legislation to increase transparency and disclosure of political spending. In addition, we will work to send a Supplemental Appropriations bill that supports our troops who are in harm’s way to the President's desk very soon.
