MESSAGE FROM THE MAJORITY LEADER

	This week, the House continued working [2] to investigate the causes of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and develop strategies to prevent this from happening in the future. Yesterday, we passed legislation [3] to continue our emergency response efforts by amending the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 to authorize advances from the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund. While all the funding in the trust comes from oil companies, this bill authorizes the Coast Guard to access those funds in their continued response to this devastating national disaster and ensures that BP will continue to foot the bill for this disaster. Next week, the House will continue to build on our efforts to create jobs and grow the economy by considering legislation to promote lending from community banks to small businesses. Critical to our economic prosperity, small businesses employ over half of all private sector employees and have created 64% of net new jobs over the past 15 years. While Republicans have opposed every job creation measure we’ve considered, I hope they’ll join us as we fight for small businesses and the middle class.
