On Thursday, House Democrats were joined by House Republicans and the White House in announcing a bipartisan economic stimulus package that will provide a needed shot in the arm to our weakening economy. This is a good compromise that will put money in the hands of 117 million hard-working American families, including 35 million families who otherwise would not have received tax relief if Democrats had not fought for them. This bipartisan package also helps small businesses by encouraging business investment, and it will help families avoid foreclosure. While I am disappointed that Republicans would not allow us to include an extension of unemployment insurance benefits or increasing food stamps, we will continue to look at these issues as we monitor the state of the economy. I expect to bring this package to the House Floor quickly, and I hope the Senate will join us in supporting it.
This week, the House held a vote on overriding the President's second veto on extending the Children's Health Insurance Program. Even as the economy slows and health care costs continue to increase, Republicans once again stood in the way of 10 million low-income children receiving the health care they need. Democrats will continue to focus on this issue and work to make health care more affordable for all Americans.
