An Economy that Works for Everyone

House Democrats are committed to ensuring Congress takes action to increase economic opportunities, grow our middle class, and help American families and businesses succeed. As our economy continues to recover, Congress should take action on number of legislative proposals that would help create the economic opportunities that will help families secure a place in our middle class:

Renewing Unemployment Insurance

The first priority for Congress in 2014 should be renewing federal emergency unemployment insurance for people still searching for work.  When emergency unemployment insurance expired on December 28, 2013, 1.3 million Americans immediately lost this assistance, with an additional 72,000 Americans, on average, expected to lose it every week Congress doesn’t act.  House Republicans have ignored the American people by refusing to bring legislation to the Floor for a vote that would restore this insurance for millions of Americans still struggling to find work while our economy continues to improve.  Click here for a full fact sheet on the impact of failing to renew unemployment insurance.

Raising the Minimum Wage

Raising the minimum wage would help American families secure a place in our middle class while also strengthening our economy.  In addition to helping 28 million American families, raising the minimum wage would generate economic activity, create new jobs, and strengthen our middle class. House Democrats have introduced H.R. 1010, the Fair Minimum Wage Act, which would raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10. Democrats will continue to encourage House Republicans to take action on this overdue increase in the minimum wage. Creating Jobs

As our economy recovers, Democrats are fighting for middle class families and small businesses.  Democrats believe that small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and have worked to help them grow and create jobs.  We are continuing to pursue our Make It In America plan to create economic opportunities for Americans by increasing domestic manufacturing, promoting education and skills training, and creating an environment where businesses create well-paying jobs here at home.

Ensuring Equal Pay

Ensuring Americans receive equal pay for equal work is a cornerstone of building a strong economy and supporting working families.  It’s not just a women’s issue – it’s a family issue. The Democratic-led Congress passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in 2009, which makes it easier for women to effectively challenge unequal pay.  But Democrats believe that additional steps must be taken to ensure women receive equal pay, which is why Democrats are calling for passage of H.R. 377, the Paycheck Fairness Act.  Democrats and Republicans should work together to continue the fight for pay equity and recommit ourselves to fairness and equality for all Americans.
