WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Republican legislation marked up by the Ways & Means Committee that could end extended unemployment benefits:

“After more than four months in the majority, Republicans have made their priorities clear – and it is not the middle class. They have not produced a jobs agenda to get more Americans back to work, they’ve proposed ending Medicare as we know it, they are fighting to protect taxpayer subsidies for oil companies and now they are moving forward on a bill that could take away extended unemployment benefits for over four million Americans. This would harm families as well as our economic recovery.

“Democrats are focused on jobs and working families, which is why we’ve put forward our Make It In America agenda to create jobs both today and in the future by encouraging more businesses to make their products in America and sell them here and around the world. This is an agenda supported by labor and business alike, and it’s what our nation needs to keep our economy growing – not bills that take away assistance from families who have lost jobs through no fault of their own.”
