WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) announced today that Mariel Saez has been promoted to National Press Secretary, succeeding Stephanie Young, who is heading to the White House. Mariel joins Communications Director & Senior Advisor Katie Grant in Whip Hoyer’s leadership office.

“Since joining my staff four years ago, Mariel has excelled in every role she’s taken on,” said Whip Hoyer. “As my Maryland Press Secretary and as a national spokesperson, she has strong relationships with the press, and she has effectively communicated my positions and the Democratic message to my constituents in Maryland and to Americans across the country. I am pleased Mariel will be taking on this new role. Her tireless work ethic, knowledge of the House, and experience with the press will continue to make her a valuable asset to me, the Democratic Caucus, and members of the media.”

“Stephanie has done a tremendous job as my National Press Secretary,” Whip Hoyer said. “She has been a wonderful resource for the press and a key part of House Democrats’ messaging efforts, and I wish her all the best as she heads to the White House.”

Mariel Saez has worked for Whip Hoyer since August 2010. Since April 2012, Mariel has served as his Maryland Press Secretary, managing press in the Fifth district and throughout the state of Maryland. She also serves as a national spokeswoman on several issues, including veterans, education, immigration, and trade. Prior to that, Mariel was the Press and Research Assistant, first in Hoyer’s Majority Leader office and then in the Democratic Whip office. From Leonardtown, Maryland, in Whip Hoyer’s district, she graduated magna cum laude from St. Mary’s College of Maryland with a B.A. in Economics.

Stephanie Young is joining the White House staff as Associate Communications Director. She has been with the Hoyer office since January 2013 as National Press Secretary. Her last day is Tuesday, July 15.
