WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to news reports regarding comments made by Majority Leader Tom DeLay and other leading Republicans:

“Everyday it becomes clearer that the Republican Party is out-of-touch with America and is increasingly stepping out-of-bounds in pushing their political agenda.

“News reports today confirm that Republicans are crafting a strategy of impeaching and intimidating judges who do not enforce the Republican political agenda and have the temerity to believe that the judiciary is a co-equal and independent branch of government.

“Republicans talk about the will of the people being ignored but what they are really advancing is their partisan political agenda.  For example, in the most recent high-profile case to which they refer, the American people strongly supported upholding the judiciary’s decisions, and opposed Congressional and Executive Branch interference.

“I urge Republicans at the federal, state, local and grassroots level to disavow this campaign to undermine the system of separation of powers and checks and balances which have guided and preserved our democracy for over two centuries.”
