Republicans launched an effort today dubbed “YouCut,” but they only propose cutting far less than 1% of the total budget. Compare that to the $4.5 trillion deficit that Republicans left President Obama after more than a decade of their failed economic policies and debt-financed spending. Maybe Republicans were sick the day they taught math in school, but their efforts at fiscal responsibility don’t even begin to make a dent in the enormous deficit racked up under their control. Democrats are always ready to work with Republicans on real ways to tackle the federal budget deficit. Just this year Democrats enacted the Pay-As-You-Go law, passed a second bill to reform how the military – one of the biggest parts of our budget – buys things to save taxpayer money, and established a bipartisan commission to determine ways to confront our long-term budget challenges.
