WASHINGTON – House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to President Bush’s second speech in California as in many days on the economy:

“President Bush once again blamed an inherited recession – directly contradicting the Administration’s previous acknowledgment that it started several months into his term – corporate America’s failings and the September 11th terrorist attacks for the sluggish economy.  Yet, he offered up the same old political agenda that he has been trying to sell around the country since he took office.

“The problem is the president’s agenda is a political agenda – not a jobs agenda.  And jobs are what this economy needs right now.  America is down 3 million jobs since the President took office, and tort reform is a red herring that must leave the jobless shaking their heads.

“The president says his economics policies are putting more money in people’s pockets – has he not heard that the median income of the American family went down by almost $500 in 2002?

“I share the president’s optimism, his belief in America’s will to overcome any obstacle and his faith in America’s future.  But I do not believe that the president has a plan to grow jobs in the American economy.  As the number of unemployed remains stubbornly high, I am hopeful that the White House and Republicans will finally join Democrats in Congress to work on a fair and responsible plan to create jobs for unemployed Americans.”
