Majority Leader Hoyer Statement on White House Fiscal Summit

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after attending the fiscal summit at the White House this afternoon:

“Today’s fiscal summit at the White House was a positive step as we begin to address our nation’s long-term fiscal challenges, and I commend President Obama for convening this meeting so quickly at the beginning of his Presidency.  The conversations held today were frank and honest assessments of the fiscal realities we face.

“Everyone attending today’s summit is aware that these issues require more than a one-day event.  I’m pleased that the President said that he would put in place a process to continue this discussion.  I hope Members of both parties are committed to continuing the dialogue that we began today without ideological litmus tests and by putting all options on the table as we work together to restore budget discipline.

“The summit made it clear that tough choices will be necessary to rein in the record deficits and debt confronting our nation.  President Obama’s budget outline being sent to the Hill this week starts making those tough choices.  I am pleased that the President is including statutory pay-as-you-go budget rules in his outline, and I am encouraged that his budget takes into account the need to pay for health care reform.”
