WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today:

"When it comes to fiscal responsibility, actions speak louder than words.  The number of earmarks exploded under Republican leadership in the House, and for six years President Bush did nothing to slow their growth.  Democrats, on the other hand, have enacted real reforms in the past year that have made the process more transparent while also cutting the number of earmarks in half.

"While House Republicans are offering an earmark proposal that contradicts their irresponsible record on earmarks, Democrats will continue to be the party of fiscal responsibility and keep working to ensure the process is as open and transparent as possible.

"The Republican focus on earmarks now seems to be nothing more than a smokescreen for their fiscally irresponsible policies that have spawned record budget deficits and spiraling debt.  The American people are far too smart to be fooled by this diversion and see it for what it is."
