WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, which began on September 15 and goes through October 15:

“During Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the legacy, tradition and countless contributions Hispanic-Americans have made to our nation.  Hispanics are an integral part of our culture and our economy, and their commitment to faith and family has made our country a better place.

“With today’s weakening economy, families from all neighborhoods and backgrounds are finding it more difficult to reach the American dream.  Under Democratic Leadership, we have raised the minimum wage, passed a housing bill to help families keep their homes, and enacted legislation to make college affordable for more students.

“The Hispanic-American community should be proud of its many accomplishments that have helped enrich our nation.  I applaud their contributions and pledge to them - and to all Americans - that Democrats will fight for policies that restore our national and economic security."
