Majority Leader Hoyer Announces Key Staff Changes in Floor Operation

WILLIAMSBURG, VA – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) announced today to the Democratic Caucus at the Caucus Issues Conference here that he has promoted Deputy Floor Director Alejandro Perez to be the new Floor Director.  Perez will replace Rob Cogorno, who recently announced his retirement after 25 years as a House aide.  Hoyer also announced that he will promote Alexis Covey-Brandt, currently the Deputy Director of Member Services and Floor Assistant in the Majority Leader’s Office, to fill Perez’s current position as Deputy Floor Director.

“I am extremely pleased that Alejandro has accepted this offer to become the new floor director – a critical position not only within the Majority Leader’s Office but also for the entire Caucus,” said Hoyer.  “For the last five years, Alejandro has done an excellent job as Rob’s deputy and he clearly knows the responsibilities, duties and challenges of his new position.  Alejandro has very good relationships within our Caucus, at both the Member and staff levels, and I know he will do a wonderful job and ensure a seamless transition as Rob departs.”

Perez joined Leader Hoyer’s staff in January 2003, after Hoyer was elected Democratic Whip.  Before that, Perez worked for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, rising to the position of executive director.  He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas in 1995 and a master’s degree from Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs in 2003.  He also attended the Universedad-Menendez in Pelayo, Spain, where he studied U.S.-Spain relations.

In announcing the promotion of Covey-Brandt, Hoyer said: “Throughout her five years in my office, Alexis has continually demonstrated her competence and capabilities across a range of responsibilities.  Alexis is a tireless worker, and has earned this well-deserved promotion.  She knows our Caucus very well, and will be a terrific asset for this office and Members as Deputy Floor Director.”

Covey-Brandt also joined Hoyer’s staff in January 2003, when he began his first term as Democratic Whip.  Prior to that, she taught second grade.  She is a graduate of Haverford College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology in African studies.  She also studied at the University of Ghana-Accra, and wrote her senior thesis on "Images of Africa in the American Classroom."

Cogorno has served as Hoyer’s Floor Director since January 2003.  “Rob has been a tremendous asset to this office over the last five years, and to our Caucus over the last quarter century,” said Hoyer.  “Rob is a great team player who has good judgment, institutional knowledge, a deep understanding of policy and process, and real strategic insight.  He is a good friend, and I wish him nothing but the best as he enters this new phase in his career and tackles the challenges of the private sector.”
