WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this morning regarding the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister and opposition leader Benazir Bhutto:

“The assassination today of former Prime Minister Bhutto is not only a tragedy for her family, loved ones and millions of supporters, but also a severe blow to real democratic reform in Pakistan.  Madam Bhutto was committed to democratic principles and it is imperative that the cause she championed continue to move forward.

“This vicious attack on the former Prime Minister is an urgent reminder that the civilized world must remain vigilant against the forces of extremism, hate and violence.  And, it is critical that the Pakistani government reassure its people that this kind of violence is completely unacceptable, and that it bring those who planned, aided and perpetrated this attack to justice.

“I want to express my deepest condolences to Madam Bhutto’s loved ones, supporters and the people of Pakistan for their tremendous loss today.”
