THE LEADER'S REPORT: WEEK OF MARCH 31, 2008

MESSAGE FROM THE MAJORITY LEADER

This week, the House passed the Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Reauthorization Act.  Our nation has both a moral obligation and a national security interest in combating the spread of these diseases.  This bill recommits the United States to the fight to eradicate HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.

Democrats are also acutely focused on the economic issues Americans are rightly concerned about.  Under the Bush Administration, household incomes have dropped, gas prices have more than doubled, college costs are up by more than a third, foreclosures have hit a record high, and we have now had three straight months of job losses.  Democrats are working to address these issues that have been ignored by the Administration for seven years.  Legislation to address the housing crisis is being developed, and I hope to bring it the the House Floor soon.

Next week, our attention will shift to Iraq as General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker come to the Hill to provide a report on the situation there.  I hope they will provide answers to some pressing questions: Why is political progress - the stated goal of the surge - not being made in Iraq?  Why do security gains seem to be solely dependent on the cooperation of Moqtada al-Sadr?  Why should we allow the readiness of our military to degrade to its lowest point in years?  The facts on the ground show that Iraq is not making necessary progress.  It is time for the Iraqi government to take responsibility for the security and stability of its own nation.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
