MESSAGE FROM THE MAJORITY LEADER

On Monday, President Obama issued an Executive Order lifting the eight-year ban on embryonic stem cell research put in place by the Bush Administration. For nearly a decade, this ban impeded our nation’s scientists from discovering life-saving treatments. With the President’s action on this important issue, millions of Americans afflicted with life-altering diseases can have hope for a better future.

Portrait Unveiling of Shirley Chisholm

Last week, Leader Hoyer attended the portrait

unveiling of former Congresswoman Shirley

Chisholm (NY). Joined by  civil rights leader,

Dorothy I. Height, Rep. John Lewis (GA), Rep.

Hank Johnson (GA) and Rep. Al Green (TX).

The conversation on health care reform continued this week as three House Committees held hearings and the Administration held its first regional health care summit.  These actions are a positive step by bringing people together and building consensus for reforms that will cut costs, expand coverage, and improve quality.  Skyrocketing health care costs have strained the budgets of families and our government, so getting these costs under control is a critical part of addressing the economic crisis and restoring the fiscal health of our nation.

Next week, the House will consider the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act. A top priority of President Obama, this legislation will increase the size of AmeriCorps and create new service opportunities to volunteer in fields such as clean energy and education. It will give more Americans an opportunity to give back to their communities and get them involved in helping our country through the current economic crisis. I hope we can quickly send this bill to the President for his signature.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
