MESSAGE FROM THE MAJORITY LEADER

This week, the House returned to session after an election where Americans made it clear they want both parties to find common ground on the challenges facing our nation. House Democrats are back to work, and we are focused on creating jobs, growing the economy, and restoring fiscal responsibility.

With that focus in mind, we voted on a bill yesterday that would have extended unemployment insurance benefits for millions of Americans that remain out of work through no fault of their own. Unfortunately, Republicans blocked that extension, meaning thousands of families will see their benefits start to expire shortly after Thanksgiving. We will keep working on this issue in the weeks ahead, and I hope Republicans choose to work with us.

In the coming weeks, the House will vote on an extension of tax cuts for middle class families. Democrats are committed to preventing any increase in taxes for middle class families, but we should not add $700 billion to the deficit in order to give tax cuts to the wealthy. Americans are rightly concerned about the deficit, and tax breaks for millionaires will deepen the debt without boosting our economy.

I hope you and your family have a happy and safe Thanksgiving.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
