Leader's Report for December 3, 2010

For Immediate Release:

December 3, 2010

MESSAGE FROM THE MAJORITY LEADER

This week, House Democrats passed legislation to prevent a tax increase on middle class families. I was disappointed that Republicans chose to vote against extending tax cuts for the middle class, instead fighting to hold them hostage to add $700 billion to the deficit for tax cuts for the wealthy. During this time of economic uncertainty, we cannot increase taxes on the middle class. I hope the Senate will act quickly to ensure that come January 1, taxes won’t go up on families across the country.

Also this week, the House sent two important measures to President Obama to be signed into law. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act increases access to school meal programs and will work to fight childhood obesity. This bipartisan legislation is an important step towards solving child hunger and reversing the obesity epidemic affecting our nation. Congress also passed the HELP Haiti Act, which will grant permanent resident status to Haitian children adopted by American families after the devastating earthquake Haiti experienced earlier this year.

Next week, the House will address funding for America’s priorities, and continue our work on other pressing issues.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
