"Two years ago today, the Affordable Care Act was signed into law. It was a major step forward in our efforts to provide access to affordable health care to more Americans. Today, millions of Americans are already seeing the benefits.
"In the two years since it was signed into law, I’ve heard from many people in Maryland about why passing the Affordable Care Act was so important.
"One woman from Beltsville let me know that, before health care reform, she was forced to choose between paying her high premiums or keeping her small business open during the recession.
"Another from Hollywood told me about how her mother had been dropped by her insurance company and couldn’t afford the cancer treatments she needed. She died of the disease because she didn’t want to place her family in debt.
"An emergency room nurse living in Woodland Beach shared stories of treating uninsured patients with diabetes who chose food over insulin because they could only afford one or the other.
"These are real stories from real people who needed the Affordable Care Act to pass and for whom health reform is now making a real difference. We won’t allow its opponents to turn the clock back and put insurance companies back in control.
"Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies can no longer deny coverage to children with pre-existing conditions, drop you when you get sick, or place lifetime limits on coverage. Parents can keep children on their insurance up to age 26, and seniors are seeing their prescription drug costs decrease.
"Let’s work together to strengthen access to affordable health care in the years ahead, and this week let’s celebrate what we’ve achieved together, which is already having a positive effect on the lives of millions of Americans."
