Hoyer Transmission Measure Included in American Clean Energy and Security Act

WASHINGTON, DC – A bill authored by Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) to expand the production of superconducting and other advanced electric transmission cables was added by Representative Jay Inslee (D-WA) as an amendment to the American Clean Energy and Security Act under consideration in the Energy and Commerce Committee. The measure aims to improve transmission efficiency, increase the reliability of the power grid, and assist in the deployment of alternative energies.

Super conducting cables that can be buried below ground will not only minimize the loss of energy during transmission, but provide a more reliable siting alternative to the overhead copper lines used today. Advanced Cable Deployment Authorization Act of 2009 (H.R. 2347)
 
The Advanced Cable Deployment Authorization Act of 2009 makes transmission loan guarantee funds authorized in the Economic Recovery Act and other energy laws available for the manufacture of superconducting electrical cable and other efficient wires.

• Environmental benefits: underground cables move power with greater efficiency as overhead wires, meaning a dramatically reduced footprint and less land use.
