WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Women’s Equality Day:

“Today, America marks Women’s Equality Day: the anniversary of the day women secured the right to vote through the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. This amendment was only passed as a result of the work of generations of women, who struggled for a full and equal voice in our democracy. In the same way, the generations that followed carried that work on, arguing for equality in the workplace, in government, and in the home. Today is a day to reflect on the work that has made this nation more equal and just, and to continue to ensure in our own time that every American can take advantage of his or her God-given potential. That’s why equality of opportunity is at the heart of Democrats’ agenda. It is the principle behind our efforts to ensure that women secure equal pay for equal work, to end discrimination against women in health care, and to build a better future of middle-class opportunity through the Make It In America plan for job creation.”
