WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today following the memorial service for victims of the tragic shooting at the Washington Navy Yard:

"I was moved at this evening's memorial service by the uplifting words by President Obama, Defense Secretary Hagel, Secretary Mabus, Washington D.C. Mayor Gray, and others as we mourned the loss of twelve dedicated patriots who lost their lives in Monday's tragic shooting. The service was a strong reminder that, when events like this occur, we come together to comfort one another as an extended American family.

"Those who serve at the Washington Navy Yard are an integral part of our national defense, and I am proud to represent many of them in Congress.  The twelve men and women who perished in the shooting, including three of my constituents – Sylvia Frasier, Frank Kohler, and Kenneth Proctor – worked each day to keep our nation safe and our military personnel prepared for their missions. They each took great pride in supporting our war fighters in the Fleet and will never be forgotten by their community, the Navy, and a grateful nation.

"Monday's shooting was marked by tragedy, but it was also characterized by heroism on the part of our first responders, including D.C. Metropolitan Police Officer Scott Williams. They put their lives in danger to secure the scene, come to the aid of victims, and prevent further loss of life.  I join in thanking them for all they continue to do, and my thoughts and prayers are with all those who are now mourning loved ones and recovering from their injuries."
