WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on Tuesday’s incident outside the Turkish embassy:

“I was appalled at visiting Turkish security personnel’s use of violence against peaceful protesters here in Washington earlier this week.  President Erdogan may be eroding freedom of speech and assembly in his own country, but he and his team are wrong to believe that this type of behavior is acceptable here in the United States or that it will go unpunished.  There must be consequences.  We cannot allow undemocratic practices to be imported into this country, and I urge President Trump and Secretary Tillerson to take whatever steps are necessary to respond appropriately to this violation of our citizens’ rights.”
