WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Obama Administration announced that they will challenge China’s illegal export subsidies benefitting their auto and auto-parts industries at the World Trade Organization:

“Today’s action is yet another step taken by the Obama Administration to hold China accountable for their unfair and illegal trade practices. When competing on a level playing field, American workers, businesses, and manufacturers can out-compete anyone. But by providing illegal export subsidies to their auto and auto-parts industries, China is tilting the playing field in their favor and putting other nations, including the U.S., at a distinct disadvantage.

“As the Administration takes action, Congress must also do our part to strengthen American manufacturing and ensure a level playing field. House Democrats’ Make It In America plan, which aims to bolster our manufacturing industry and create jobs, also focuses on enforcing trade laws and rules. I continue to urge House Republicans to work with Democrats to pass Make It In America legislation to complement the Administration’s actions today and give our businesses the best chance to compete across the world.”
