WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Trump Administration's announcement on Friday that it will lift sanctions on Sudan:

“Sanctions relief is a means, not an end. The government in Khartoum has shown that it is prepared to take concrete steps to address the concerns of the international community with regard to sowing instability, engaging in ethnic violence, and blocking access by humanitarian aid workers to those who need help. The steps taken in recent months have been positive, but there is more progress to be made.

“Congress must keep monitoring the situation and be engaged closely with the Administration when it comes to determining whether sanctions need to be reimposed or whether sanctions relief can move forward.  I also hope Sudan will take steps to address the billions in judgments against it as a result of the 1998 Tanzania and Kenya bombings.  I will continue to work in Congress to promote peace, stability and economic progress in the region.”
