WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released their jobs report for September:

"Today’s report is a further reminder that Congress needs to act now on jobs. While the number of private sector jobs rose by 137,000 in September, and we have had 19 straight months of growth in the private sector, this is not nearly enough for the millions of American still without work and worried about making ends meet for their families. We still have much work left to do.

"President Obama’s proposal, the American Jobs Act, and House Democrats’ Make It In America Plan contain the best ideas from both parties that will help businesses create jobs right away and strengthen our economy over the long term. Since taking control of the House nine months ago, Republicans still have not introduced their own plan to create jobs for the middle class. Instead, they continue to focus on an ideological agenda and have proposed measures that benefit only the wealthiest individuals and corporations. The American Jobs Act and Make It In America would invest in infrastructure, innovation, and education, which are the ingredients for the private sector to create well-paying jobs here in our country. Democrats believe that a real job strategy is one that puts the middle class first.

"It is long past time for Republicans to work with Democrats and take action to create jobs. The Senate is expected to move forward on the American Jobs Act soon, and I strongly urge Speaker Boehner to allow the House to consider jobs legislation as well."
