WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Senate Republicans blocked a vote to renew emergency unemployment insurance:

“While 1.3 million Americans who have lost their jobs continue to go without emergency unemployment insurance, Republicans continue to obstruct, delay, and filibuster.  There is no time to waste, and Congress must act quickly to restore this lifeline for these Americans as they seek their next jobs.  Every week Congress fails to act, an additional 72,000 people, on average, will lose access to this critical assistance.  I urge House and Senate Republicans to stop standing in the way of keeping these Americans out of poverty and instead work with Democrats to find a compromise solution that can restore emergency unemployment insurance right away.”
