WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy (NY-04) announced she will not seek reelection:

“When Carolyn McCarthy came to Congress in 1997, she arrived with a fierce determination to make our communities safer from gun violence and expand opportunities in education, health care, and job creation.  After the tragic day in 1993 when her husband was murdered by a gunman in an attack that also injured their son, Carolyn made it her mission to work on behalf of victims and their families everywhere and to make it more difficult for dangerous firearms to fall into the hands of criminals and the mentally ill – and to prevent children from losing their lives unnecessarily from gun accidents.  She has established a reputation as a staunch advocate for America’s seniors and for children with disabilities.

“For seventeen years, Carolyn has served the people of central Long Island as a skilled legislator and as a powerful voice for protecting the most vulnerable and strengthening our middle class.  It has been a privilege to serve alongside her, and I am proud to call her my friend.  I wish Carolyn all the best as she prepares to leave office at the end of the 113th Congress and in wherever her career takes her next, and I join in thanking her for her service to the people of New York and to the nation she has served so ably.”
