WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Congressman Henry Waxman (CA-33) announced he will not seek reelection:

“I have known my good friend Henry Waxman for almost fifty years.  He is one of the House’s most talented and committed legislators.  Henry has made an extraordinary difference in creating a healthier environment and more accessible health care.  I will sorely miss him as a colleague, a trusted counselor, a supporter, and a friend.

“For nearly four decades, Henry has been a tireless fighter in Congress for Californians and for all Americans.  Throughout his tenure, Henry has made it a priority to protect our nation’s air and water, combat the dangers of tobacco, fund AIDS research, and work for greater access to affordable health care, culminating in his central role in the successful passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010 – which has benefitted millions of Americans and provided them with greater security.

“As a strong supporter of Israel, he has been a vocal advocate for that country’s peace and security.  As Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, Henry promoted legislation to ensure Americans have safer products in their homes, cut carbon emissions, and incentivize the growth of America’s advanced, clean energy manufacturing sector and the high-skill, high-wage jobs it produces.  And in his service as Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, he pushed for greater transparency and accountability for those serving the American people in government.

“It has been an honor to serve with Henry in Congress, and I wish him and his family all the best as he prepares to retire at the end of this year.”
