WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Congressman Gary Ackerman (NY-5) announced he will not seek reelection:

"I've had the honor of serving alongside Gary Ackerman in Congress for nearly thirty years, and during that time I have come to know him as a faithful public servant, a fighter for New York families, and a dear friend. As a public school teacher, Gary taught students the workings of our system of government and the value of justice for all. Later, as a community journalist, he helped bring people together and remain informed about issue affecting their neighborhoods. As a State Senator and U.S. Representative, Gary brought that same concern for his community, its families, and future generations to legislating.

"Among his achievements have been acts to protect victims of HIV/AIDS against discrimination and to provide protections to individuals against credit fraud. His tenure has been characterized by a pronounced desire to seek justice for those denied it, provide comfort to those in need of it, and shine a light in those dark places that have seen too little of it.

"I will miss Gary in the halls of Congress, and I wish him and Rita the very best as in his retirement. I join in thanking him for his many years of service to the people of New York's Fifth District and to our nation."
