WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House passed a resolution honoring the coal miners who perished in the West Virginia mine tragedy:

“Today, the House passed a resolution honoring the 29 miners who lost their lives in this month’s tragic explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia. We mourn their deaths and send our thoughts to their families; and we honor the difficult, dangerous work of all miners, who do so much to power our country. But we can best honor the dead by doing our utmost to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again. Especially given the fact that the mine where the explosion occurred had been cited for hundreds of safety violations, it is essential that these deaths be investigated fully, and that we take mine safety with a new seriousness. We owe the memory of those who lost their lives, and the families that mourn them, nothing less.”
