WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki announced his resignation:
“Secretary Shinseki has served our nation with honor and distinction. His decision to step down reflects his carefully considered determination that the VA will be best served with new leadership as it addresses the unconscionable actions by some working in the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care System and potentially other VA health facilities over the past few years.
“No veteran who has put his or her life at risk for the security of our nation ever ought to be denied timely and quality care by the VA. The Obama Administration is moving swiftly and decisively to identify where veterans were denied the services they were due and ensure they can get the care they need. At the same time, the President, Secretary Shinseki, and others in the Administration have made it clear that anyone who is found to have acted improperly must be held accountable. We must make certain that all veterans are able to get timely appointments, that this matter is investigated thoroughly, and that concrete steps are taken to ensure improper actions are not repeated and the VA meets its obligations to our nation’s veterans.”
