WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after a bipartisan Make It In America bill failed under suspension despite having majority support in the House:

“I am disappointed that the House failed to pass Rep. Eric Swalwell’s bill to secure critical minerals used in the production of energy efficient products, renewable energy systems, electronics, and other technologies.  His bill is an example of the kind of Make It In America legislation that can help our manufacturing sector compete and grow jobs.  While it was defeated this evening under a procedure that requires a two-thirds majority to pass, its strong bipartisan vote of 260-143 is further demonstration of the broad support for the proposals contained within the Make It In America plan.  Given that bipartisan support, the Republican leadership should reschedule this bill for Floor consideration as soon as possible.

“I applaud Rep. Swalwell for his tireless work on this legislation, which would benefit America’s manufacturers and help protect our nation’s access to strategic mineral resources.  I hope that the Congress will have an opportunity to vote on this bill again soon so that it can be passed with a strong majority of Members behind it.”
