WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Republican leadership announced they will bring a Farm Bill without nutrition assistance funding to the Floor tomorrow for a vote:

“Once again, House Republicans are in disarray.  Violating their own ‘three-day’ rule of posting legislation for all to read, they have announced a vote tomorrow on a controversial, 600-page Farm Bill that nobody has had a chance to read and that omits nutrition assistance funding for low-income families under the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP).

“To move forward with a bill that does not include this funding is a shameful abandonment of the most vulnerable in our country, including the 76% of SNAP-participating households that include a child, senior citizen, or person with a disability.  Republicans know this is a bill to nowhere – even if they succeed in passing it through the House, the Senate will not consider a Farm Bill without nutrition assistance.  This dead-on-arrival messaging bill only seeks to accomplish one objective: to make it appear that Republicans are moving forward with important legislation even while they continue to struggle at governing.

“I am extremely disappointed that Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader Cantor have chosen to bring this partisan bill to the Floor.  Instead, let us work together to pass a bipartisan Farm Bill that funds nutrition assistance and protects the most vulnerable in our country from the very real threats of hunger, poverty, and disease.  Congress owes it to the American people to act responsibly in line with our highest principles.”
