WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to the executive order signed this afternoon by President Trump to roll back the Clean Power Plan:

"The Clean Power Plan was promulgated in order to protect public health and protect our nation from the devastating impacts of climate change. Today's executive order flies in the face of what accepted science tells us about climate change: that carbon pollution is contributing to changes in weather patterns, melting ice caps that raise sea levels and threaten coastal communities, and increases in extreme weather that will have a harmful and lasting impact on our nation’s economy and taxpayers. Scrapping the Clean Power Plan is short-sighted and will do nothing to halt the global transition from heavily polluting sources of energy to cleaner ones, which has more to do with long-term economic realities than near-term federal regulations.

“Since taking office, the Trump Administration has taken a number of steps to undermine efforts to combat climate change. I urge the Administration to abandon this dangerous executive order and instead work with Congress to protect public health, limit the effects of climate change, and help the people of America's coal country in a real and lasting way.”
